introduction

This program reviews the international standards for dental infection control with an emphasis on best practices. Topics of review include personal protective attire, sterilization and disinfection, dental unit waterlines and biofilm, bloodborne exposures and other items of interest to the dental professional. This program also reviews the latest information regarding the infectious diseases of concern in the dental setting. This program is ideal for professionals new to the dental profession as well as for those that would like to update and refresh their infection control knowledge.

Patient safety is a vital part of the deliver of health care services. A basic understanding of disease transmission and epidemiology are a key part of the foundation necessary to ensure health care workers are equipped to make reasonable decisions regarding infection control practices. Following that fundamental knowledge, being able to implement clinical practices that are reasonable and effective is imperative to continued quality care. This course brings these two elements together to assist participants in ensuring their dental practice is a safe environment for patients and workers alike.

Biography

Eve Cuny is the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Assistant Professor in the department of Dental Practice at Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry. Ms. Cuny is a consultant to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and the FDI Education Committee. She has served as an expert reviewer and advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is past chairperson of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP). Ms. Cuny has lectured extensively on infection control and safety in dentistry and has published numerous articles and textbook chapters on the topic.
