| introduction |
| One of the biggest controversies in Orthodontic treatment is whether a Class III case should be treated early, in an attempt to avoid surgery, or whether the case should be left untreated until mandibular growth is complete. This lecture will show four classical cases that have been treated at different stages based on the correct diagnosis of the Class III malocclusion. This lecture will review analysis of appropriate records to differentiate between a mid-face deficient Class III patient that would benefit from early treatment vs. a true increased mandibular discrepancy case that may require surgical correction at a later date. We will review the evidence based literature associated with reverse pull facemask therapy and determining the appropriate appliance that would stimulate maxillary sutures as we protract the maxilla. |

learning Objectives: |
| Following the conclusion of this session each attendee will be able to: |
- differentially diagnose between a pseudo Class III and a genuine Class III malocclusion
- be able to place Planas Direct Track Class III composite build-ups to prevent early postural shift of the mandible,
- treatment plan a Case that has maxillary deficiency and a normal mandible, using expansion based therapy and a reverse-pull facemask,
- treat a non-growing Class III, with the use of temporary anchorage devices, to avoid complex orthognathic surgical procedures,
- be able to refer an obvious surgical problem but be conversant with the type of surgery that is required i.e. the difference between distraction osteogenesis and traditional orthognathic surgery,
- discuss fixed appliances and the mechanics involved during the correction of a Class III malocclusion, and be able to retain a Class III case, during the remaining mandibular growth phase.
